Endometrial Biopsy

The endometrium or lining of the uterine cavity can occasionally cause abnormal uterine bleeding because of abnormal growth (hyperplasia) or because of the presence of cancer. The endometrial biopsy is performed by passing a very small catheter through the cervix into the uterus to obtain a sample of the lining. This procedure is usually easily performed in the physicians office without significant discomfort. Local anesthetic placed at the cervix prior to the biopsy eases discomfort and facilitates the procedure.  A pathologist then evaluates the biopsy tissue using a microscope to determine the presence of any abnormality.  Sometimes it is important to obtain the biopsy before any further management of the abnormal uterine bleeding is discussed.
