Sonohysterography

This procedure is similar to the transvaginal ultrasound in that, a slender transducer is placed into the vagina. With this procedure a small catheter is inserted through the cervix and into the uterus which allows for saline, (salt water solution) to be placed inside the cavity of the uterus. The saline gently pushes open the walls of the uterine cavity allowing for the evaluation of the inside of the uterus. Abnormalities such as polyps or fibroids which cause abnormal uterine bleeding can be identified in this manner. The procedure is usually well tolerated, however, very mild menstrual-like cramping sometimes occurs.
