Hysterectomy Alternatives

Hysteroscopic Endometrial Resection

The lining of the uterine cavity can be removed in a different way than the ablation which destroys the endometrium. Often this will lead to no more menstrual cycle after the procedure. More often however, women with heavy periods will have normal or decreased bleeding with the menstrual cycle. This is a satisfactory result for about ninety-five percent of women who have the procedure done as an alternative to hysterectomy. There are still a few women who will go on to have a hysterectomy because of continued heavy bleeding.

Removal of the lining is often performed at the same time as a hysteroscopic myomecty.  When fibroids growing in the uterine cavity are responsible for heavy or abnormal bleeding, they can be removed with small instrumetnts and a camera in the uterus.  Removing the endometrial lining with the same instrumentation during removal of the fibroids can improve the likelihood of a successful outcome with little or no menstrual bleeding after the procedure.
