Hysterectomy Alternatives

Laparoscopic Myomectomy

Sometimes fibroids can grow large and lead to problems because of their size. It is often possible to remove just the fibroids and leave the uterus. This procedure is performed through the laparoscope and is surgically challenging.  Therefore, not all surgeons can perform the procedure.  The laparoscopic myomectomy is commonly done for those women who want to keep their uterus in order to have children, especially if the fibroids are preventing pregnancy. Some women may choose to have a myomectomy because they do not want a hysterectomy

Hysteroscopic Myomectomy

Fibroid tumors growing within the uterus can grow into the uterine cavity and cause abnormal bleeding. Sometimes fibroids that are large and take up all the space within the cavity can cause problems with becoming pregnant or can lead to miscarriage. With hysteroscopic myomectomy, a thin lighted telescope is placed through the vagina into the uterine cavity. The fibroids within the cavity can then be removed without removing the uterus.
