Ovarian Mass

An ovarian mass represents an abnormality. The mass can be composed of solid components or parts which are cystic or fluid filled. There are benign processes which occur causing ovarian masses, however, the greatest concern when an ovarian mass is present is ovarian cancer.

An ovarian mass must be evaluated by some imaging modality prior to any surgical removal. The best way to image the ovaries is by transvaginal ultrasound and sometimes CT (computed tomography) or MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) can be helpful. For some older, post-menopausal women, there are lab tests like the CA 125 that can be elevated with ovarian cancer. This test, like the imaging studies, however can be non-specific. There is no test or imaging that will predict, with 100% certainty, the presence or absence of ovarian cancer.
